When Do Labor Day Sales Start?
Labor Day sales can start as early as mid-August and often coincide with end-of-summer sales and back-to-school sales. However, the best sales will likely crop up closer to the weekend itself, so keep an eye out for major markdowns the weekend of Sept. 2-4, 2023.
Is Labor Day a Good Time To Buy a Mattress?
Labor Day is a great time to buy a mattress. “Three-day weekends, in general, are a good time for scoring mattress deals, and Labor Day is no exception,” explains Trae Bodge, shopping expert. “Most mattress brands will be having some kind of sale over Labor Day, so you’ll have your pick!”
Labor Day Mattress Shopping Tips
While you’re out shopping for a new mattress, keep your eyes peeled for both additional deals and the fine print. Here are some mattress-shopping tips to keep in mind this Labor Day weekend:
- Double-check the coupon start and end dates. Not all mattress manufacturers keep the same sale dates around holidays. Some manufacturers only offer discounts for a couple of days, while others extend sales into the following week.
- Join the manufacturer’s mailing list for an additional percentage off. Some, but not all, manufacturers may give you an extra 5% to 10% discount code just for signing up for their email newsletter. Other manufacturers may only honor the deal advertised.
- Check for extra discounts for senior citizens and veterans. Look at the terms of the discount and see if there are specific codes for veterans or seniors. Avocado is a good example of a manufacturer that typically offers discounts for those who have served in the military. But note that these discounts can not always be stacked with other offers.
- Compare freebies that come with a new mattress purchase. Sometimes mattress manufacturers will offer free sheets or pillows as an add-on when you buy a new mattress – a nice perk if you’re also in the market for new bedding.
- Check for free shipping and free returns. Many online mattress companies offer free shipping, but some may charge you a fee if you decide to return the mattress during the trial period.
- Make sure your current sheets match your new mattress’s height. Standard mattresses can have heights with a 6-inch difference, and standard sheets can range just as widely. You’ll need to buy new sheets if your current sets can’t cover the height of your new mattress.
- Look for warranty information and sleep trial periods. “Sometimes you don’t know if a mattress is for you until you’ve slept on it a few times, so when you’re shopping, look for free trials or warranties,” explains Bodge. “Free trials may be 30, 60, or 90 days, whereas warranties – which can sometimes be limited – can be quite long, like 10 years, 20 years, or even a lifetime, as is the case with sleep brand Saatva.” Be sure to read the fine print to see if the warranty terms include prorated repairs or extra fees with shipping and handling if returning the mattress.
- Try the mattress in a store before you buy it. Though buying a mattress online is convenient and trial periods tend to last for at least several months, it’s always good to test out a new mattress in person to get a sense of how firm or bouncy it is. “I know bed-in-box, mail-order mattresses are a big trend and they are so convenient to purchase (I’ve purchased one myself in the past), but I think it’s beneficial to test a mattress in person, if possible,” Bodge says. “You can only glean so much about a mattress from a written description and online demo video.” If you sleep with a partner, make sure to take them with you to get their opinion, too.
- Look for zero-interest offers. “A mattress is a big-ticket purchase, so look for zero interest offers (Lowe’s and Home Depot often have these with their store cards) or buy now pay later options so you’re not carrying interest month to month,” Bodge shares. “If you pay by credit card, pay with the card that allows you to earn points or cashback on your purchase. It may only be 1% or 2%, but that’s money in your pocket!”
