Presidents Day weekend is not only a time for honoring U.S. presidents, but it’s also a good time for deal-conscious consumers to find deep discounts on a variety of higher-priced items, such as new mattresses, kitchen appliances, and furniture. “[Three]-day weekends are known for discounts on big-ticket items and Presidents Day is no different,” says smart shopping expert Trae Bodge in an email.
You’ll find mattress deals this year from Saatva, Avocado, and others, as well as deals on major appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, and dryers. Discounts on furniture such as sofas, beds, desks, and more also will be plentiful.
Shoppers can take the long weekend to find the best deals at major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy, which offer sales via their stores and websites, and online-only retailers such as Amazon and Wayfair. But they won’t be the only ones offering Presidents Day discounts.
And while Presidents Day is known for its great deals on higher-priced home goods, it’s also a good time to take advantage of sales on less pricey items, from skin care products to health supplements to coffee. If you have a favorite retailer, check out to see what deals it may be offering for Presidents Day.
We’ve also got a mix of Presidents Day deals we’ve rounded up that may pique your interest.
When Is Presidents Day 2023?
In 2023, Presidents Day is Monday, Feb. 20. Presidents Day is a federal holiday that is celebrated on the third Monday in February each year. Originally established to celebrate George Washington’s birthday on Feb. 22, modern-day Presidents Day is now seen as a day to celebrate all American presidents.
When Do Presidents Day Sales Start?
Presidents Day sales often officially start the Friday before the holiday weekend. In recent years, it’s not uncommon for sales to start even earlier, as much as a week or even a few weeks ahead of the holiday, but the best sales are going to be concentrated during this three-day weekend.

Presidents Day Deals – Tips To Save
While Presidents Day falls on Feb. 20 this year, some sales that surround it began earlier, and some extend into March.
Here are some shopping tips to help you save the most money:
Take advantage of holiday sales: If you’re in need of a higher-priced item like a mattress, kitchen appliance, or couch, shop during a holiday sale like Presidents Day.
“Discounts will vary, but they can be as deep as 40% in some cases” for these pricier items, says shopping expert Bodge.
Consider off-season items or the previous year’s models: Presidents Day sales are perfect for replenishing your cold weather wardrobe, for example, since many retailers will be discounting winter clothing to replace it with spring fashion.
But don’t expect to save big on spring clothing for Presidents Day.
“The prices will be better closer to the end of the spring season when retailers are looking to create space for the summer merchandise,” says Bodge.
The same goes for appliances, home goods, and many other products. You may find good Presidents Day deals on older models that are being discounted to allow space for new ones.
- Comparison shop: Check multiple manufacturers or retailers’ sites to make sure you find the product you want at the lowest price.
- Use available coupons and promo codes: Check U.S. News Deals for current coupons, and apply them at checkout when shopping online. Check if the seller’s website allows coupons to be stacked for more savings.
- Consider buying refurbished or open-box items: These generally cost less, sometimes significantly so. Some retailers, such as Amazon and Best Buy, offer a wide assortment of these products, some of which come with limited warranties.
- Check if a retailer offers price matching: Some retailers, such as Target and Walmart, have price-match policies and will sell a product at a competitor’s lower price. Certain restrictions and conditions apply. If you’re not sure, “it can’t hurt to ask if a retailer will offer a price match,” Bodge says.
Use a deals website, browser extension, or app: These can help save you money by alerting you to current sales and providing cash-back offers, digital coupons, and promo codes.
“While retailers will be offering sales [for Presidents Day], you should always take a moment to use a deal site to save even more,” says Bodge. “For example, over the holidays, Macy’s was having a big sale, but I was able to earn 15% cashback by using Slickdeals. Because I have their browser extension installed, I was automatically alerted to the available savings when I browsed the Macy’s site.”
Bodge notes that cash-back offers are usually higher around the holidays, but even a discount of 5% can add up to big savings on an expensive item like a mattress or large furniture.
Use credit cards that provide cash back or points for purchases: Many major credit card companies as well as retail store credit cards offer cash back on a percentage of total purchases or offer points as part of a rewards program that can be used for future savings and other benefits.
Bodge suggests shoppers use a credit card that gives the most points for purchases and avoid using those that don’t offer any points, such as debit cards, when purchasing higher-priced items.
“Every little bit helps!” she says.
